Mövenpick Hotel
“We are not anything extraordinary – we are simply successful because we are doing quite normal things in an extraordinary manner”. That’s what the founder of Mövenpick regarding their hotel chain, whose HQs are in Netherlands but whose goal is to conquer Asia and Africa, focusing on the Middle East as well.
During our time in Sri Lanka, we spent one day at Mövenpick Hotel in Colombo, and we kind of agree with what the the founder thinks of his creature.
It is located in the central part of the Sri Lankan capital city, Kollupitiya, and is near to shops, museums and, most importantly, the beach. The first 5-star hotel built in Colombo after 25 years follows the international guidelines: eye-catching lobby, modern facilities and minimalist interiors. It lacks that Sri Lankan touch, but this is the Dutch philosophy, aiming at satisfying the international taste.
And they manage to reach their goal with their rooftop space and food. On the 24th floor, in fact, a stunning infinity pool with bar offers the possibility to match Sri Lankan orange sunsets with experimental cocktails, which is never a bad idea.
Robata Grill and Brasserie are the two hot restaurants in the hotel, open to non-guests as well. The first Japanese, the second French, but same philosophy: refined menu and large selection. The third place where guests can fill up their bellies is Ayu, an all-day buffet divided in isles offering different types of food, from Sri Lankan to Indian, from Italian to Chinese. We had the pleasure to enjoy our lunch at Robata Grill, which was very good, but did not blow up our mind. Thing that, on the contrary, experienced at Ayu, where we had dinner and breakfast. Huge selection and insane high quality – characteristics that pair very well when it comes to food.
Room chapter. Minimalist and comfortable, with a king-size bed, flat TV, spacious desk and sofa-everything that both a family and a business person might need during their stay. The masterpiece is, with no doubts, the walk-in shower, that overlooks the coast road and the seaside. A nice way to start the day.
Movenpick Colombo is highly recommended to those who wants to sink into Colombo’s skyline and amenities, looking for an international touch in a Sri Lankan environment.
