Sweet like honey: the Honigmond Hotel
Away from the bustling streets of Mitte on the peaceful Tieckstraße we found the charmingly designed and well thought through Honigmond Hotel. The name literally translates to “Honeymoon”, but as in “honey” and “moon”, not the trip after a wedding. Entering through the glass door we were immediately welcomed by an airy reception/lounge area. Leather sofas, heavy gold ornate frames with baroque paintings were scattered around the room and we immediately felt as if we were guests at a friends house. That one friend with money and impeccable taste for interior design.
Walking down the hallway the floorboards creaked beneath our feet and with each step the 100 year old building opened up to reveal its charm. The metal framed bed, the gargantuan mirror with its over-the-top frame, the heavy curtains and the love for detail with each and every little pieces of decor give the room its relaxed and familiar feeling and so it was easy for us to lay back and enjoy the fluffy pillows. The only thing that surprised us was the absence of this old-world artful touch in the bathrooms in the standard rooms – very run-of-the-mill. Upgrading to the studio or the apartment would have helped as those come with stylish bathtubs and glossy black tiles lining the wall. Each of the 36 rooms has a unique interior color scheme, which distinguishes Honigmond from the big hotel chains.
We rented one of Honigmond’s own branded bicycles (basket included) for a day and explored Berlin. A lot of sights and lovely restaurants were quite close and the pace of bikes is so much better for visitors. All you urban hotels that don’t do this yet, take a hint!
Back at the hotel we enjoyed a coffee from the Nespresso machine in the lobby and had a drink from the fridge. The only downside to a stay at Honigmond is that breakfast is only served in the restaurant next door and the price of €18 per day for a breakfast buffet is way too much, especially for Berlin. But hey, who needs a buffet anyway when you are in a city that spoils visitors for choice when dining out. You could spend weeks just eating your way through.
BTW: Free Wi-Fi, Laundry service, no minibar, no spa-area.
Verdict:
The Honigmond Hotel is the perfect place to rest your bones after a long day in the throbbing heart of B-town. Sit back and relax. It feels like the proverbial home away from home.
