THE BROOKLYN BEEF CLUB - BERLIN, GERMANY

Juicy Steaks at the Brooklyn Beef Club. That’s  all you need.

In the cellar of The Dude, behind a heavy wooden door, guests are greeted at the Brooklyn Beef Club with dark wood tables, plenty of framed black and whites of celebrities hung with artistic flair, travertine floors and an original Helmut Newton. We speculated that the it was simply imitating urban steak joints in Chicago or NYC, but found it has Berlin flair all its own.

We walked in through the hotel, into the bar area, where we faced a wall of whiskeys, any lover of the single malt will feel right at home here with 180 open bottles on offer. After our bar-side experience we were shown to our table, past two delicate neon signs with “stay hungry” and “stay foolish”, nodding to US entrepreneurial spirit.

We sauntered over to our table; sauntering seems like the right way to move at this swanky establishment. We were tucked into the second vaulted section where we ordered wine and our starters: yellowfin tuna on avocado mousse and, of course, beef tartar. Both were artfully served – the tartar well seasoned and the yellowfin tender as can be. There were plenty of cuts on offer, from Rib-eye, to T-bone and porterhouse. We could have also gotten then burger, but then we saw the mother of all cuts. We bit the bullet and ordered the Chateaubriand Filet Steak. Yes, it was a splurge. Yes, we did share it. And no, we didn’t regret it for a second.

As to the clientele: Our fellow guests were a mixture of well-dressed 30-somethings, classy couples and sophisticated gentlemen. According to the website, the restaurant doesn’t require jackets, but appreciates “casual-elegance” whatever that means. So look sharp and enjoy an evening of laid-back decadence in what feels like the most exclusive beef joint in town.
