One of my all time favorite sandwiches at Bakesale Betty
This little place is a gem that is unknown even to some Berkelites, but the ones that do know it stand in line every day between 11:00 and 14:00 (yes they are only opened for 3 hours) to get their signature fried chicken on bread baked right there in the shop. You’re probably asking yourself, as we did, why the hell someone would line up around the block for a sandwich. The answer is delicious: It’s the mixture of crisp chicken, topped with spicy cabbage coleslaw or fresh avocado crammed into a crunchy baguette. It’s so good, you’ll start missing it while you’re still there.
Also try the homemade lemonade (not too sweet, thank heavens) and the strawberry shortcake (with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, yum)
The service is incredible. Friendly and fast, just the way it should be. We got the wrong sandwich at first and before we could unwrap it, an employee followed us outside with our actual order. We wanted to give him back the first one, but he told us to just keep it. Awesome.
In case you where wondering, this place is not a restaurant. It’s the size of a walk-in closet so most of the line is outside (so bundle up in winter) but don’t worry, no matter the line, it always moves fast.
After that, find a quiet corner and dig in like an animal… don’t worry about the people staring and pointing while you inhale this mouthful of wonderful. Envy was always a green eyed monster just like the Hulk who would probably go there too.
Dig through these pictures and you’ll see what made such fond memories. Maybe someday while you’re standing in line at Betty’s, you’ll see two people drooling on their shirts. Say hi… it’s probably us.
We fell in love with Bakesale Betty. It’s unpretentious and awesome and if we find something better, we will let you guys know.
